Foundation replacement is required when a foundation is in poor condition. The two main reasons for replacement are cracking and deterioration. The replacement process consists of several steps. First, the house is stabilized through a method called shoring. Next, the section of damaged foundation is broken up with jackhammers. When the section is removed, the iron support bars and concrete forms are setup. Now that the section is prepared, new concrete is poured into place. When the concrete is settled, the forms are stripped off and all the surrounding dirt is replaced. After all these steps, your home is nice and sturdy.

One other option to foundation replacement is building a sister foundation. When a section of a foundation can not be replaced, an additional foundation is built. This second foundation will lie directly behind the original one. The new foundation will hold the weight of the building, removing the weight off of the unsafe section.

Below are some pictures of a foundation repair job in Los Angeles area.

The workers are breaking the concrete footing around the house to begin the foundation replacement process. Here is a corner of a house where all of the concrete footing has been removed. After the concrete is removed the shoring (support) is added. The worker is making sure all the measurements are exact. When all the measurements are correct, the rebaring of the foundation takes place.
The worker is measureing out more rebar. The concrete has arrived at the job site. The concrete is being poured into the pump. The worker is feeding the piping for the concrete under the home. The new foundation is being pouring into place.
Another picture of the freshly poured concrete. The rest of the concrete is slowly being poured around the house. Now that the concrete is has dried, the forms are removed. Now the worker is pulling off the form. Now, the foundation is finished. All the forms have been removed. It's now time to remove all the debris and transform the home back to normal.
